Recent KPMG research into the business case for an AD biomethane industry in Ireland has validated the Renewable Gas Forum Irelands ambition to develop a sustainable indigenous biomethane industry in Ireland. The report highlighted that 12% of current gas demand in the country could be supplied through an indigenous agri lead AD industry on a phased basis between now and 2030. The benefits of supporting the industry appear to be significant with a huge stimulus for the rural community, 2.6 m tonnes of CO2 abatement potential along with a net positive return for the Irish exchequer through generating approximately €1.26 in revenue for every €1 used to support the establishment of the industry. The report was presented to policy makers in November and engagement is continuing with key stakeholders to promote awareness of the opportunity.
