In May 2020, second public consultation for the draft of Alternative Fuel Act was announced in Lithuania. The main goal of proposed new legislation is to achieve 15% share of renewable energy sources (RES) in transport sector in 2030. It is foreseen that natural gas together with biomethane will be one of top 3 main drivers of this transformation. In 2030 biomethane and green hydrogen shall account for at least 5,2 % of total energy consumption in transport sector and together with natural gas it will make 32%. Support will be provided for biomethane production and upgrading facilities, together with increased opportunities for the supply of biomethane to natural gas networks. Also, support will be provided for gas-powered vehicles with the obligation to purchase biomethane.
